Beefs make a splash
Last year the Beefs didn't get too involved at the trade deadline but with this years team on the outside looking in GM Homer decided to pull the trigger on a deal that saw fan favourite Brad Richards sent to the St Louis Spirit.
'We are all sad to see a player of Richards calibre go but the offer presented by the St Louis Spirit just had to be taken.'
The Beefs see 3 young players come in and manage to cut their salary down by a fair margin giving Homer a little more flexibility with his team. The Beefs have sat right up against the cap for the best part of the first 2 seasons and the decision was taken to ensure the future of the franchise was strong by making sure there was room to give some of the young talent room to grow.
The Beefs have been criticised for not being physical enough and the recent addition of Ott in addition to Backes has address that. In Backes the Beefs get a real power forward who can put the puck in the net and is certainly not shy about throwing his weight around. Perron is showing signs of becoming a top playmaker in the league and at the ripe age of 21 has a very bright future ahead of him.
'We are looking forward to seeing where these two take the team.' Said GM Homer. 'We still have a strong veteren presence being supplied by Iggy but we like how we have managed to get a lot younger overall without losing too much in the way of performance.'
The Beefs now have an extremely talented and youthful core with Stastny, Backes, Stafford, Perron and Michalek all under the age of 26 and with a good balance of youth and experience hope to be able to push for the final playoff spot as well as ensure they can compete in future playoffs as well. Add to this core some exciting young talent in the farm that has been added to with the addition of Wandell and the Beefs can feel happy that the team is in good hands.
Both Perron and Backes have made an impact in their first games adding an assist each in a 2-1 win over the KoC who are sitting top of the Mogilny Conference. Deslauriers was on fire in goal stopping 37 of 38 shots earning first star and stopping the Beefs long losing skid. The Beefs now sit 6 pts out of the final playoff spot with 15 games to play so it will be a tight finish.
