Almost completely missed this yesterday! Good signing for the Ducks, should help ease the load on Hiller a little as reports I read say he is starting to feel the strain now.

League minimum contract can't be a bad thing either!

Yeah, Hiller complained of being lightheaded and didn't play against the Avs on Saturday. I just thought it was due to the altitude of the Avs stadium!

Seriously though, McElhinney is a decent back-up and already has 2 shut-outs this season. I feel sorry for him if Emery is going to basically take over his place on the roster.

Why does a free agent have to clear waivers? That's some stupid rule there.

It is to stop teams with cap issues leaving it til late in the season to sign up some of their players. Many people felt that is what the Ducks did a couple of seasons ago with Niedermayer and Selanne taking majority of the season to 'decide' to play or not then signing for the stretch drive.

A player with a certain level of experience would have to go through waivers to come back into the NHL from the AHL so why wouldn't they for the KHL?

In Emery's situation he is only going through waivers because they are sending him to the AHL for some conditioning. If they placed him straight into the Ducks lineup then he would not require waivers as he hasn't played in another league.

I can understand/accept that if you started somewhere else and then came to the NHL to clear waivers. And I see. That's alright then, I guess.

Hmm, Hiller still out and it is a major concern for the Ducks. With recent performances confidence in McElhinney has diminished to such an extent that Emery has been called up from his conditioning stint at the Crunch - after only 2 or 3 games! Hope he can get into the swing of things early enough because poor old McElhinney seems a little shell-shocked after the recent deluge of goals flying past him and is most certainly not the man to take the Ducks into the play-offs. Get well soon Jonas...

Did McElhinney's performances drop after Emery was signed? I can't imagine that did his confidence much good.

No, Ducks had been going brilliantly until last week. Hiller had been out for a few games but McElhinney had taken over and performed very well. The Caps game must have knocked his confidence and then knowing you're the number 1 go to guy must be very different from being a back-up. Anyway, Ellis is an obvious trade up and we need it!
