Season 9 Update
Before I start any of the offseaon tasks, I want to get an idea of which GM’s are still active, and maybe agree a few changes for Season 9.
There were only a couple of GM’s who sent lines more than once last season, and several who never sent any at all. If your still around for Season 9, please post something below.
There were discussions in the past about increasing the salary cap. This was put on hold as there was a massive imbalance with team finances. The finances problem seems to be resolved now, and all teams funds will be reset to $20m as I laid out before the start of season 8.
Average salaries have been going up each season, and we had an influx of high paid pros in the farm league last season. Im proposing increasing the salary cap by $7m this season, and then reviewing this before season 10.
Those who paid attention to the farm league would have noticed scoring was incredibly high in Season 8. This is partly due to the high quality of some of the players, but mostly a result of a lot of teams only having a handful of players on the farm. There is an option in the Sim to require all teams to have a full farm roster. I think we should turn this option on for Season 9 and try to regain some balance in the farm league.
Depending on how many of you are continuing next season, we may want to look at realignment. If we go down this route, I would like to hear everyone’s opinions and ideas for how we could do this.
Looking at past drafts, and knowing the amount of work that is required to create all of the players in the Sim, I was thinking we could reduce the draft to 3 rounds. Most teams don’t sign players from the lower rounds anyway, and we have a massive list of unsigned players. We would look into compensating teams that hold additional 4th and 5th round picks acquired through trades.
I have also been contemplating the idea of running a Fantasy Draft. This would help to rebalance the talent across all teams, and make the league more competitive, and hopefully result in GM’s being more active again.
Please let me know what you all think. I would like to keep this league running, so any ideas to help make the league better would be appreciated.

Re: Season 9 Update
I am sticking about but I know from previous seasons that interest has been dropping quite a bit but I am here to support as best I can.
With realignment, what is the thinking behind that? Is that to alter the number of teams or just moving them about to try and balance the field?
I like the idea of cutting down the size of the draft as I agree the later rounds do seem a waste of time. I also like the option of requiring farm teams to field a full roster.
As for a fantasy draft, do you mean scrapping the current rosters in total or would there be "protection" methods similar to what the NHL does with expansion drafts? I am all for trying to rebalance some of the talent but would rather not lose all of my young talent that I spend best part of 8 seasons developing.

In terms of realignment I think both options are a possibility. As things are, im more inclined to just keep the 16 teams and swap a couple of them around. Some divisions have more active GM’s than others, and I think it would encourage more activity if those active GM’s were split up a little more. I don’t want to end up with an entire division of teams without GM’s. The Auto roster function did a reasonable job of keeping those teams without GM’s reasonably competitive.
With regards to the Fantasy Draft, I wouldn’t be against a complete rebuild with no restrictions if that’s what the majority wanted. That said, I would prefer not to go that route, as like you I wouldn’t want to give up all the players I have spent the last few years developing. An Expansion draft model would probably be the best way to go, and would allow teams to protect some of their players. How many players each team can protect is something we can look into further down the line if its an option we go with.
Maybe even something along the lines of, each teams highest paid player becomes a free agent and each team gets an opportunity to sign that player going in draft order?
Im open to any ideas.

Re: Season 9 Update
I will be back for season 9. As for the fantasy draft, I'm not keen as others have said we have nurtured some players over a long period. I am in favour of the full farm roster though. That said, Unknown Player would have to be draftable in season 9! I like the idea of a 3 round draft also. As for realignment, the Giraffes in one conference and everyone else in another. I would probably still fail to make the playoffs.......

Re: Season 9 Update
If I remember correctly, we had a Player Unknown in last seasons draft.
Speaking of drafts Leafy, I know you started working on some draft ratings for the last draft. Do you still have these and if not do you have any interest in putting together the draft ratings for the upcoming draft?

Re: Season 9 Update
If I am being honest I completely lost interest this season. Perhaps this was down to winning back-to-back titles and so where do you go from there (?) or perhaps (more likely) it is the lack of active competition, especially in the farm system. After about 20 games I knew both my teams would sail through to the play-offs again so where is the incentive even bother? By the time the play-offs arrived I just didn't have the spirit to care any more. Get an active league (and forum- we haven't even discussed the Stanley Cup Final which is all likelihood could be settled tonight!) would go a long way to getting me interested again. I for one, and as team with (arguably) the strongest franchise this might sound odd, would be up for a complete redraft of all players as I see it as the only way to get interested parties back to the table. Otherwise the same 6 or 7 active GMs come on here say I like the status quo and so we continue that way, new GMs get put off by the inbuilt disadvantages and the whole thing continues to slowly deteriorate. I for one would rather have a competitive league to play in from a fresh rather than watch this one die a slow death.

We could go down the route of using actual NHL teams and essencialy starting from scratch. I think we would find it easier to recrute new GM's that way too.
