Couldn't you argue that would be jumping on the jannon bandwagon?
Re: Fan identity crisis
Is it so easy to simply pick a team to support and try and get an emotional attachment with them going? Doubtful. Probably needs to happen a bit more organically. Just try watching loads of hockey and eventually you'll find yourself learning towards a team - whatever the reasons. And it is possible to enjoy a sport without really being a fan of a particular club; although I must admit it does give a certain edge.

I want pick a team in that area so it fits with my other US sports teams. I'm still completely open to others though and am heading into the season neutral. I have a few teams on my mind atm it's not 100% Rangers or Sabres.
Re: Fan identity crisis
I have a bit of a soft spot for the Sabres - I've got a friend in our Syracuse office and he's a big fan. He comes to Boston every so often for meetings and always arranges it so that it coincides with a Bruins v Sabres game.
We've been swapping details of our fantasy teams this morning. His policy was not to pick any Leafs, Habs or Bruins, then realised that his team would be pretty shit, so he nabbed Patrice Bergeron.

I love how he doesn't see the Sens as a problem

And speaking of the Sabres....
Poor old Ryan Miller (but on the upside, it does mean he won't get steamrollered by Lucic in future)
clicky

Re: Fan identity crisis
I would follow the advice of others, watch a few games then you will find a team you like. With family near Toronto i was always going to root for the leafs but then developed a soft spot for the predators in the (at the time) fabulously named gaylord arena!!!
Although with the lock-out i have started watching the NFL, still do not know enough about it just that a white guy throws the ball to a fast black guy then some people do a dance for one reason or another........ although this did make me laugh

Re: Fan identity crisis
Looking at the schedule for some teams. Of the only two West teams I'd consider San Jose have 17 games that start at 1am or earlier. Nashville have 34.

Everyone loves the sex predators, and hates glory hunters.

I believe the Jopter to English translation of what Jonzee said is "Pick Nashville because everyone hates the Devils."

*cough cough* not everyone
Re: Fan identity crisis
I actually have no opinion either way on the Devils. I don't like the Preds though. I find them always tight on defence and their games tend not to be too exciting usually.

That perfectly describes the New Jersey Devils, every year. Ever.

I dunno, I bet Marc found this game pretty exciting
Re: Fan identity crisis
Nashville and the NY metro area are the two places in America I have connections to. I've been to Nashville for the CMA Festival and my NFL, MLB and NBA teams are all NY based. I'm really enjoying watching hockey without caring too much on who wins but it's getting to the time of year when I want a team to cheer on before it gets too close to the serious end of the calendar because I'm worried that may subconsciously effect my choice.
For me if it's not Nashville or NJ, it'd be Nashville or NYR.

Re: Fan identity crisis
Since Nashville seems to be the common denominator here I think that is where your heart is, there is just this annoying thing nagging you which is the previously established NYC connection.
I has something similar. I started off with the NHL and chose the Leafs (or rather it was forced upon me) and I came to love them. When I came to choose a NFL team there is no Toronto team so I had to look elsewhere. I settled on the Miami Dolphins. Then when it came to NBL I went back to Toronto and choose the Blue Jays. When it came to NBA I was torn between the Toronto Raptors and the Miami Heat. So I guess I am saying is it is OK to support teams from different cities so don't get too hung up on your existing NYC connections.

Re: Fan identity crisis
I just don't feel a sporting connection to Nashville though. That's the problem. I like the city more than wanting them to win.
Re: Fan identity crisis
Just watch lots of games, both Nashville and NJ and you will soon decide I am sure.
My choice of the Stars was simply because it was the first team I knew about. The first game I saw a glimpse of on TV was the Stars (North Stars at the time) and I knew of them from the Mighty Ducks movies so when playing hockey games on the mega drive I always chose the Stars and it kinda grew from there!
Not sure you can force a team because of reasons that have little to do with the team. Surely you already tried that when you picked the Habs?

Re: Fan identity crisis
I've watched a lot of games and tried to see who draws me in but at the same time I feel I'm being drawn to these teams because of the prior connection. I'll just wait and see what happens.

When people ask me which NBA team I support, I say the Harlem Globetrotters because although they're really good they've never won the title. It's amazing how many people think I'm being serious.
