2012 Draft
So the first round of the draft was done and dusted, last night. How do you think your team faired?
The Blues suprised a few of their bloggers/commentators, by heading to the blue line, instead of picking up LW Samuelson. Jordan Schmaltz is our boy, all 6ft 2in of him....he reminds me a bit of a young David Schwimmer, but I wont hold that against him. He does though, list the Blackhawks as his favourite team. Signing for The Blues must have been a real bummer
Elsewhere, further down the draft, The Flames gave away a 2nd round pick, to move 5 places up the 1st round - a little bit of a waste, I thought.
Even better came from the circus that is Toronto. 5th pick in the 1st round, and Mr Burke signs up 6ft 200lb d-man, Morgan Rielly. Not a bad pick you may think - until you read the small print - He only played 18 games last season before suffering a torn Anterior cruciate ligament. Leafs fans must be doing somersaults of joy

Re: 2012 Draft
My night got interesting as soon as Bettman announced a trade before the 8th pick. Very sad to see Staal go but you cant keep hold of a player who doesnt want to be there. I wish him all the best as he has always been one of my favourite players.
The upside of the Staal trade was the acquisition of the No. 8 pick wich we used to pick D man Derrick Pouliot. We then managed to pick another D man in Oli Maata. Basically Shero has looked at the defensive shambles of the playoffs and has made his intent clear.
We now have two pairs of D-men in our system that play on the same line in junior hockey, which if they can build up good chemistry could be fantastic in the years to come.
However it didnt end there with Shero moving Zybynek Michalek and his 4million conmtract to the Coyotes for prospects and picks. This along with hopefully moving Paul Martin and his 5million contract provides the Penguins with an extremely healthy Cap situation come July 1st, and who just happens to be one of Sid's best friends from junior, Say hello Mr Parise.

Ducks took some kid called Hampus. What a stupid name. Still, who knows how any of these picks will really pan out...

I don't know... if there is a player you want, and you think someone else might nick him, you might as well pull the trigger.
But yeah, a 2 is a bit high.

Re: 2012 Draft
Aparently the Flames were taking the same guy even if they had to take him 14th, so moving down the order and adding a 2nd round pick worked out well for us.

Re: 2012 Draft
Have just about come round to the fact we've signed PK Subban's little brother. CouLd have been worse though. I think there would have been serious fall-out if we'd signed Son of Ulf.

Re: 2012 Draft
I think this one is great for the Leafs.
but I'm pissed (local bar sells Stella as well as Bud Lite) so it might look different tomorrow.

Aye, it's great for the Leafs, not for us.

Re: 2012 Draft
This draft was awful. I can't believe Fosberg fell to #11. Why pick D? There were dozens of good D in this draft and we didn't even pick one of the best five on the board.
The Schenn-JVR trade. Meh. Not sure what to make of it yet.

Re: 2012 Draft
I am very happy I wanted one of 3 centres and Faksa was at the top of that list for me.
Not so happy about the Ribeiro trade but I will hold judgement as I think that is just the start of the rebuild!

We picked D because we knew we were going to trade either Schenn or Phaneuf to get a forward. So and thus we traded Schenn for a player ravaged by injury, but it is all good because we drafted a defenceman to cover the loss of Schenn. A defenceman ravaged by injury....

Re: 2012 Draft
At least the dude you drafted played 16 games. The guy who went #3, Galchenyuk, played 2.

Re: 2012 Draft
Very happy with the Rangers pick at #28 Brady Skjei , Projected around the late teens another big bodied defenseman to add to our growing list of blue chip prospects. Hoping we are a big player in FA if not then im still confident of getting back to the conference finals and beyond

Re: 2012 Draft
One of our 3rd round picks, was a netminder. His scouting report was very favourable, whilst he wasn't rated the best, no5 is still pretty good.
Then I saw his stats for the 2 seasons in junior hockey. He has a GAA of 3.7 and a sv% of 0.850......
The other below him can't have been that great!

I thought it was the other way around, junior numbers tend to be quite good!

As a comparison:
Vezina nominees:
Lunqvist: 2.02 in junior
Quick: 1.58 in junior
Rinne: 2.64 in junior
STL goalies:
Halak: 2.01 in AHL
Elliot: 2.75 in AHL
So you could indeed be right in your theory he is dump. If you need more proof he is a bust:
Reimer: 2.44 in AHL
Gustavson: 3.44 in junior
He be worse than Gustavsson!

Re: 2012 Draft
Gus is no longer a Leaf so we do not worry ourselves with this any longer. I noted with interest Columbus snap up Bobrovsky and Tampa the same with Lindback. If the Leafs had made a trade like that I would have been happy (esp the Lindback one).

I wish we had made a move for Bobrovsky. Shame he isn't an American with a violence problem....

Re: 2012 Draft
Yes but remember junior goal scoring numbers tend to be quite high. Not basing this on any evidence but a lot of the junior numbers are pretty high.
