Holy crap, Detroit make a trade!
To Tampa Bay - K.Quincey D
To Colorado - S.Downie RW
To Detroit - K.Quincey D
To Tampa Bay - 1st 2012 + Piche (minor league D)
So Quincey returns to The Joe. Funny really, because on many forums there were a lot of fans who used to have gnashing of teeth for Holland whenever Quincey registered a point for another team, but now that we have him back, the same fans are complaining that we didn't need another defenceman. Some people are never happy.
Let's face it, Commodore doesn't really cut it and hasn't kept his place. Kindl has struggled with injuries and when he HAS played, he's been a bit unreliable. I don't think the acquisition is a bad thing, as that 6th D-man position was a bit touchy.

To me the most interesting thing about this trade is that it shows a potential lack of value in late 1st round picks this year. I think we can safely assume that Detroit's pick will be in the 20-30 range, so to give one away for a 6th D-man could show that Detroit doesnt expect it to be a very deep draft.

Re: Holy crap, Detroit make a trade!
And this from a Frnachise that has brought out Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Franzen fron the depths of round 5-6-7. I guess when it comes to scouting, they're not a bad yardstick.
Detroit's 1st round is never that high as we've been a playoff team for so many years consecutively. It's not a gloat, but more of a statement that Detroit rarely keep hold of their 1st round pick since they're unlikely to have a pop at the top 20 rookies.
Our tactic appears to be finding diamonds in the rough.

I had no idea that those three were that low in the draft....To be honest, Im stunned .
You are right about one thing - that is top notch scouting!!

Driz, I was just about to post the exact same thing. I can't believe those guys were so low in the draft. Wow.

Datsyuk, drafted 171st 1998
Zetterberg, drafted 210th 1999
Franzen, drafted 97th 2004
Helm, drafted 132nd 2005
Ericsson, drafted 291st 2002
Fillpula, drafted 95th 2005
Holmstrom, drafted 257th 1994
Mursak, drafted 182nd 2006
Some very deep drafts there, and yet they're all regulars in the team this season.

The Red Wings really are a hard franchise not to admire. But still, it pisses me off when they're on the road and half the arena is rooting for them. That's too much admiration!

And we've extended Bertuzzi by another couple of years too.

Re: Holy crap, Detroit make a trade!
I always find it difficult to criticise the Redwings in a trade because they are such a well run organisation, probably the best in the league. But here I really have to disagree with this move. I mean it makes no sense what so ever. In fact, actually no, I'm just kidding. It's another win. Quicney fulfils a need and gives them the insurance they need in the off-season. Could play on the PP as well considering the lack of offensive blue-liners in motor city.
I think the Avs win too. I have always been an admirer of Downie. He can do it all. A real agitator with goals in him, not something you find often. I would feel happy with him playing in any situation, lines 1-4, the powerplay or penalty kill (when he is not in the penalty box!). He is still pretty young too which fits in with Colorado's plans.
The real loser here I think is Tampa. They loose Downie (who I have already admitted I am a fan of) but gain a solid blueliner. Fair enough, the Bolts have been shaky at the back and that trade strengthens an area of need sacrificing a forward in an already deep pool. But then this is the barmy bit, trading for a first, and not a great one at that. Tampa is pretty stocked with prospects already and is in the play-off hunt having won their last 3 games to move within 5 points of the Leafs with a game in hand to boot. I can't help thinking this is the prelude for another move by Yzerman.

I had a quick look at some of the players drafted just before him. Erm, Andrew Raycroft and Antero Niittymaki anyone??

Re: Holy crap, Detroit make a trade!
Following along this theme I thought it would be interesting to see when the players with the most games under the belts were drafted. I just took the 14 players who had played 1500+ games...
Gordie Howe -
Mark Messier 48th
Ron Francis 4th
Mark Recchi 67th
Chris Chelios 40th
Dave Andreychuk 16th
Scott Stevens 5th
Larry Murphy 4th
Ray Bourque 8th
Nik Lidstrom 53rd
Alex Delvecchio -
Johnny Bucyk -
Brendan Shanahan 2nd
Steve Yzerman 4th
Really quite surprising. No 1st overall makes the list with Shanahan at #2 the highest.

They may not have been drafted early, but there's a fair few Stanley Cup wins in that list.

Down Goes Brown @DownGoesBrown
Every year: Experts: “You *must* build through the draft!” Detroit: “We just traded our first round pick.” Experts: “OK, except those guys.”
Re: Holy crap, Detroit make a trade!
I can't believe the Wings got a conditional 7th rounder for Commodore...that's a future HOF player the Lightning just dealt away!!!
