2013 Alumni game

I can't have been the only one who thought almost as soon as the game was announced, "I can't wait to see the alumni game!"

However, what has put a damp squib on this has been Steve Yzerman saying he has no plans to play:

Gutted. I would love to see Yzerman play in a Wings uniform again. Obviously, I my first thought was Yzerman, flanked by Shanahan and Fedorov, but with Sergei still playing in the KHL, and Shanahan in his player safety role, I can't see it happening. Shanny would be afraid to check anyone for a start! I thought about how much I'd like to see Probert play again, but consider someone like Kocur an adequate replacement. Then of course, you're looking at goalies like Hasek, Vernon and Cheveldae making appearances. Coffey, Chelios and McCarty may also feature.

Curtis Joseph has said he'd love to play, but only for the Leafs. Fair enough, if you have a team preference, no problem, but he's said he wants Brian Leetch as one of his defencemen!? Don't get me wrong, Leetch was a class-act, but he was a Ranger through and through. Leetch has only played 15 games for the Leafs, and I think many Toronto fans would love to see others dress in the blue and white before Leetch does.

Someone in the comments did suggest giving Gordie Howe a crack at Johnny Bowers for a few shots. Although I'd love to see that happen, I can't imagine either man being fit enough to do that! Howe is 83 and Bowers 87!
