New proposal for divisions.

Nothing official yet but according to the Toronto Sun here are the rumours.

Sources say under Bettman's proposal, the league will have four divisions: Pacific, Midwest, East and South. It's believed the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets would both get their wish to move to the East conference.

Teams would play a balanced 82-game schedule with home-and-home against teams outside their division.

The top four teams in each division would make the playoffs. The first round would be divisonal play, the teams would then re-seed for conference play.

With 30 teams, one division in each conference will have eight squads while the other will have seven.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

No. I fundamentally disagree with uneven division team numbers if division position is the basis of qualification for the play-offs.

I don't mind it, the league used to be like that and the AHL currently plays a similar format.

Mandy sent me this about the possible divisions......my only thought is wtf? Stars and Sens in same division?

I think a few fundamental changes have to made to those team alignments:

From To
Dallas Mid-West -> South
Detroit South -> Mid-West
Ottawa Mid-West -> East
Toronto/Buffalo East -> Mid-West

I still don't like having 7 teams in one division and 8 in another. It is unfair on those teams in the larger divisions. You would have to adopt the approach of top 2/3 from each division qualifies and then the best of the conference rest I feel, though even that isn't perfect.

Uneven divisions is a part of North American sports though. I get what you are saying but the only way for the league to truly be 'fair' is to have one big league with everyone playing the same number of games. I like the idea of uneven divisions/games vs x opponent as it creates a level of uncertainty. How would X team do in X division? Who is really the best? Well that is what the playoffs are there for Smile

I don't mind the conference and division system of American sports and the kooky things that throws up at all!
The strength of the teams, the geography of their location, the existence of traditional rivalries I can all get over and understand.
But one thing I can't stand is if everyone numerically doesn't have the same opportunity to qualify as everyone else.

I think I am more excited than most because it could mean a change in the start time for the majority of Stars road games Smile

anything that reduces the number of 3am starts is welcome in my book!

I have always hoped they would go back to 4 divisions, I preferred that layout anyways, gives a little more meaning to winning your own division.

Of course I have read some people suggesting that this plan is laying the ground work for 2 expansion teams. Not sure I see the league doing that just yet but an interesting point.
