Versteeg dealt to the Flyers
Philiedelhia has traded fro Kris Versteeg. The Leafs received a 1st and third round pick at this years draft.

Not sure what I think of this one just yet but initial thoughts are can hardly complain. Whilst Steeger tallied points but he didn't display the defensive responsibility expected of him; though line mate Kessel has had the same problem this season.
If anything I can't work out why the Flyers made this move since they are already pretty stacked. Now heres to the Flyer crashing and the 1st meaning something!!

Re: Versteeg dealt to the Flyers
I have read a torrent of speculation the Leafs wanted the 1st and 3rd as that gives them one in each of the first three rounds......exactly what is needed for a certain level of an offer sheet.
Only time will tell of course

Beef, I've seen the same rumours, and that's the first thing I thought of when the Versteeg trade was released.

This is not a stat I want to see...
"In a bit of an ironic twist, the Maple Leafs were 11-0-2 this season when Versteeg scored a goal."

I am 88.47% certain that you can only make an offer sheet with your own picks.

I don't have the expert NHL knowledge that some of you guys have but I have a feeling you might be right, Azzy. I remember reading all sorts about offer sheets last summer when Bobby Ryan was out of contract.

Re: Versteeg dealt to the Flyers
I swear on my life that there was a GM last summer (who I can't remember) who traded to get his pick back so he could make an offer sheet. Anyone help? But I am so dead certain on this...I hate that, at age 29, my one USP (memory) is failing me

You are right Azzy, didn't think of that.

Teams must use their own draft picks for the purpose of compensation, including picks that were traded and later reacquired. They cannot use draft picks acquired from other teams (which were not originally theirs) to offer as compensation.

Re: Versteeg dealt to the Flyers
awsome, so what you guys are saying is that we have traded away one decent player for a couple of young guys who may not make the cut?
best get preparing for a few more seasons of woe i guess

So the Leafs offer sheet for Stamkos or Richards?

Re: Versteeg dealt to the Flyers
No, they can only make an offer sheet with their own picks - Boston has their first rounder. Plus, to sign either to an offer sheet - at a level where Tampa and Philly wouldn't match it - you're talking multiple first rounders.

Re: Versteeg dealt to the Flyers
Indeed, you are looking at a figure below about $6m in order to not need more than one 1st rounder.
Here's a crazy idea......maybe Burke is planning on actually drafting some players!!
