GM Homer very pleased with return from break.
Coming out of the break there were many questions buzzing around the Beefs. GM Homer took the bold move of breaking up a winning side by making 2 moves that saw Ryder, Backes and Kubina all leave town and Iginla and Keith becoming the new faces along with the call up of Zherdev. Many people were critical of this move as the team was on an 8 game win streak and Ryder along with Kubina lead the team in goals.
GM Homer had this to say about the moves. 'Yes we know it is a very risky move anytime you make changes to a winning side but we felt the potential gains from a player like Iginla are well worth the risks. The trade for Keith replaced any drop in defence with Kubinas departure and Iginla gives us another elite presence on the top line.' Another shock came as Iginla was named team captain demoting Brad Richards to an A.
The risks appear to have been worth it however as in the first game since the break the Beefs set a franchise record for goals in a game with 6 against the Broadway Blueshirts. Going in to the 3rd period down 3-1 the game turned on its head in a 48 second span that saw new guys Keith and Iginla scoring primary assists on all 3 goals. Zherdev added another goal in the final minute to end the game 6-3. Iginla potted a pair of assists alongside Keiths 3 to top off a very productive night for the new guys.
