Kovalchuk Retires from NHL
So we all knew he would never play for the entire length of that contract, but this is rediculous! I hate the Devils, bit you cant help but feel bad for them.
I guess hes off to the KHL to chase his next big pay check.

Good ol' Kovy. Not quite as funny as Wideman, but definitely worth watching.

Kovy is returning to the promised land! Expect SKA St Petersburg to announce the signing on Friday afternoon. Remind me to send a thank you card to Mr Bettman - without his ridiculous lockout, Kovy might not have realised that his future lay back in Russia.
I do feel for the Devils, but as a SKA fan of many years, this is top news. Does Kalinin hand over the C? Would the Gagarin be at the Palace if he decided this 6 months ago? It's going to be a great season.

Kovy and his contract are a big part of why we had a lockout. Not that i blame him, the Devils were the ones trying to get around the salary cap.

Amazeballs.
The Devils are hilarious. Kovy takes the big money from the front-loaded contract and then walks away to another cash bonanza in Mother Russia. The Devils need to get in a #1 Centre, when most of the free agency players have homes, and those that are already under contract would require significant trade fodder.
It's like a car crash, but a hilarious one. With Kovalchuk.

Kovy was forced out pretty much IMO. Devils are screwed for money and the size of that contract isn't viable for a franchise who is losing more money than any other in the NHL. The Devils could be entering their last season in that hole and will probably be playing from Kansas City or Seattle very soon. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Erm... what makes me think they'll stay?
1. NY/NJ is the biggest media market in North America
2. The lease for the Devils to stay in Newark was renewed for 25 years at the start of the season

Re: Kovalchuk Retires from NHL
Firstly number one NY is the biggest media market not NJ, NJ is nowhere near.
Secondly whether the lease is signed for the arena or not , the organisation is in free fall. One look at the media in the Tri-State area will tell you that the Devils moving isnt if but when

Well there's this thing called the New York metro area. It even contains parts of Pennsylvania. So, yes. The Devils are in the NY metro area.
Re: Kovalchuk Retires from NHL
Indeed but the media is not the same but anyway that is besides the point. The Devils will be moving

This makes pretty interesting reading regarding NHL teams

New Jersey Devils debt/value is scary. No wonder they had to ditch Kovalchuk!

Worryingly, with that debt / value, they still made money, unlike a lot of teams!

There are three teams above operating at losses and 10 teams from the 11 below too. The Devils are fine.
Re: Kovalchuk Retires from NHL
The devils have not paid any tax or money to the city of Newark in nearly 5 years. Nobody listened when i said the NYI would move to Brooklyn but trust me it will happen

Re: Kovalchuk Retires from NHL
What? So the worst outcome for fans in state is the team moving back to East Rutherford?
