Iggy's Weekly Round Up Empty Iggy's Weekly Round Up

Inconsistency has been the theme for Colombia Steves pre season games. Most players have performed well at one point or another but the team have struggled to combine their performances in one game. After unprecedented back to back to back opening fixtures (Great work commish), the players have improved their fitness levels, and put the summers partying behind them.

Goaltending was the big issue as newly acquired Varlamov struggled early on. Talk of a potential trade seems to have given Varly a kick up the rear end as he improved to finish with a .919 save percentage. Jonas Hiller looks set to back up Varly.

Shane Doan lead the team in points, goals, hits and +-. Doan was promptly moved onto the top line in place of the struggling David Perron thus ending speculation Mike Fisher would be renamed Dave fisher to from the "Dave line" alongside Perron and Both. Janik Hansen also impressed with 9 points. Janik will be starting his rookie season in the pros and will be looking to challenge Booth for 1st line duties. Booths two goals from 49 shots (4.08%) is simply not good enough from a goal scorer of Daves ability. Speaking of Dave, high hopes for a good year for Perron are looking a little unclear after just two points in pre season. The Daves will be looking to step up a gear once the regular season starts

Babchuk and Edler have formed a great partnership on the 2nd defensive pairing combining for 13 points and a +7. Meanwhile Rookie Erik Gudbranson has impressed playing alongside Duncan Keith. Erik's solid defensive play has allowed Keith the freedom to get forward and help out.

Down on the farm and its eight wins from eight games. With an exciting pool of forwards its looking like Brian Dinosaurs have a real shot at the cup this year.

Expectations were high for both Nino Niederreiter and Nail Yakupov. Both players are expected to be amongst the league leaders in goals, but 2nd line winger Bob Ring has eclipsed them both with 9 goals and at least one point in all eight games. Ryan Stome leads the battle of the centres over Brayden Schenn. Both players are evenly matched and will be looking to challenge each other through out the season. However, It looks unlikely that Strome will be moved up to the first line as his chemistry with Ring has been so great.

Ryan Parent has lead the defence and the team. Ryan is a team leading +7 and has captained the team well. Calvin De Haan has benefited from playing alongside Ryan and leads the team in points for a defenseman. The aging Tomas Kaberle has found a spot as a PP specialist and has notched 6 assists with his limited ice time.

Peter Budaj has been amongst the standout goalies in the league registering a .951 save % and 0.99 goals against. Young Benjamin Conz will be looking to learn from Budaj this season as he is set to be the backup goalie. Conz impressed in his two preseason starts with a .933 save %.

Iggy's Weekly Round Up Empty Re: Iggy's Weekly Round Up

Iggy's Weekly Round up is sponsored by Driz's Glazing House "We turn lumps of plastic into something people can see out of".

Ten games into the regular season Colombia Steve fans have reason to be happy.

Colombia Steve sit top of their division with a 6-2-2 record. The team sit 8th in the league for goals for and an impressive 3rd overall for goals against. Erik Gudbranson, Derek Forbort and Jared Cowen have all impressed in their rookie seasons. Helped by the experience and leadership of Keith, Edler and Babchuk. All players on the team are currently even or better on +-. Goalies Hiller and Varlamov have split duties in net. Both goalies are putting up similar numbers and competing with the best in the league. Shane Doan and David Perron lead the team in points. Both players have 5 goals and seven assists. Janik Hansen has started his rookie season well with four goals and five assists and is currently the second highest scoring rookie.

There are some areas for Colombia Steve to work on. Centres Mike Fisher and Nik Antrapov have both had slow stats and will need to improve if they are to hold their place in the team next season as the farm is full of promising centres. Special teams is another area that needs work a struggling PP not helped by the struggles of Fisher and Antrapov will need to improve from its current 17.02%. The PK is currently at 82.76% which is ranked in the middle of the league. When looking at this however you have to consider the teams average of 15.30 PIMs per game which is a league high. Not content with leading the league in PIMs, the team also lead in hits with an impressive 22.10 per game. Shane Doan's 44 hits are a team high.

Down on the farm:

Brian Dinosaurs have continued where they left off from pre season. A record of 9-0-1 is good enough to top the league. The Dinosaurs remain unbeaten in regulation in 18 games now since coach Jacques was put in charge. The Dinosaurs have scored a league high 46 goals so far with forwards Nino Niederreiter (10 goals) and Ryan Strome (9 goals). Both players have a team high 15 points. RW depth is the teams biggest strength. Shane Doan and David Perron are ranked 2nd and 3rd amongst RW's in the pros and the Dinosaurs have three of the top eight RW's in the farm league. Nail Yakupov, 3rd overall pick in the season 5 draft has surprised a few with the development of his passing game. Nail was is expected to become one of the best goal scorers in the league but has adapted his game playing along side Nino who leads the team in shots. Nail has a league leading 11 assists. Luca Sbisa has been the surprise star on defence. The Dinosaurs have a solid organised defence, but lack the raw talent that their forward lines have. Sbisa is a team leading +10 and has seen his ice team increase as a result.

Injuries have been an issue early on. Several minor injuries have cause players to miss the odd game, but Brayden Schenn's injury caused the top line centre to miss two weeks of play. Nicolas Kerdiles was up to the challenge and played exceptionally on the top line. Kerdiles has 9 points and has returned to his 3rd line duties now that Schenn is fit again. Schenn is expected to be called up to the pros next season and it looks like Kerdiles has his eye on a top six role when that happens.

Brian Dinosaurs will look to continue their success for the remainder of the season. If they can continue their league high average of 40.30 shots per game and league low 21.20 shots against they will be looking forward to play off hockey.
