NHL expansion Empty NHL expansion

Post by mc_homer Thu Aug 01, 2013 5:06 am

Not going to debate the should/shouldn't they here, I just want to take the assumption that expansion is happening. So with that in mind who do you protect on your team? Obviously for a lot of players this would change in a years time with games played but take it as if this was happening tomorrow.

The rule are..

Teams can protect either 1 goalie, 5 defensemen and 9 forwards OR 2 goalies, 3 defensemen and 7 forwards.
Each team must leave unprotected at least one defenseman who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.
Each team must leave unprotected at least two forwards who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.
Players who have not played 50 NHL games are automatically exempt.

Here are mind for the Stars

Based on one protected goalie.

Goalie
Kari Lehtonen

Defenders
Alex Goligoski
Trevor Daley
Stephane Robidas
Sergei Gonchar

Forwards
Jamie Benn
Tyler Seguin
Rich Peverley
Cody Eakin
Erik Cole
Ray Whitney
Shawn Horcoff
Vernon Fiddler

I couldn't actually name 5 defenders and 9 forwards without having 0 players available! So with the above the Stars would be making available Aaron Rome and Ryan Garbutt.

Flames player who have played over 50 games, we have:

1 Goalie
Joey MacDonald

7 D
Dennis Wideman
Mark Giordan
TJ Brodie
Derek Smith
Kris Russell
Chris Butler
Shane O'Brien

8 Forwards
Mikael Backlund
Curtis Glencross
Lee Stepniak
Matt Stajan
Juri Hudler
David Jones
Brian McGrattan
Tim Jackman

So, We make available:
McGrattan
Jackman

I suppose if there is an expansion, teams like the Flames will benefit the most as they have no players to give up!

Haha Jiggy, that is what I was thinking about the Stars! If there wasn't a requirement to have at least one forward and one defender available then I could have protected the entire organisation :S

My team would be anybody as i wouldnt care. If they expand I will no longer watch the NHL. If you have 30 teams of which around half dont make money why would you add more.

Shouldn't it be more defensemen and less forwards, or less d-men and more forwards? As at the moment wouldn't everyone go for the first option?

Those are the rules they used last time and I do believe the majority (if not all) took the 1 goalie option!

Well if those are the rules, those are the rules haha!

Goalie:

Fleury

D-men:

Martin
Letang
Scuderi
Despres
Orpik

Forwards:

Crosby
Malkin
Neal
Sutter
Kunitz
Dupuis
Jeffrey
Adams
Vitale

So that leaves Vokoun in goal, Engellend Bortuzzo and Niskanen on D and Glass, D'Agostini and Jokinen up front!

Flyers:

Goalie:
Steve Mason

D-men:
Grossmann
Timonen
Schennnnnnn, L
Coburn
Gustavsson

Mezsaros, Gervais, Streit unprotected (And Pronger, I suppose. But if you take him you are a bit dim). Most of our young D haven't played 50 or so games so are automatically exempt.

Forwards:
Giroux
The Snake
Couts
Choc Orange
Schennnnn, B
Rinaldo
Read
Talbot
Either Vinny Lec, or Hartnell.

So that leaves either Hartnell or Vinny unprotected, along with Adam Hall and a bunch of other 4th line/enforcer chaps that are pretty common.

Righty then. Erm......

Goalie

Schneider (sorry Marty)

Defensemen

Larsson
Greene
Zidlicky
Fayne
Salvador

Forwards

Zajac
Elias
Henrique
Jagr
Ryder
Loktionov
Clowe
Bernier
Zubrus

This leaves Harrold, Volchenkov, Carter, Barch, Gionta and Josefson.

Barch and Harrold haven't played 40 games last season or 70 in the last two but have all played at least 50 altogether.

Hmm, this was a bit tricky as I don't think our roster is that big.

Goalie: Tuukka (no point going for the two goalie option, seeing as we haven't got another one)

Defense: Chara, Seidenberg, McQuaid, Boychuk (which means sacrificing Hamilton because Bartowski and Krug haven't played enough games to qualify, and Ference has buggered off to the Oilers)

Forwards: Bergeron, Krejci, Iginla, Lucic, Marchand, Campbell, Thornton, Paille, Eriksson (sorry Chris Kelly, you're moving to Seattle)

I don't think we've got any other forwards. Jagr, Peverley, Seguin, and Horton have all cleared off.

Well. Look at the alternatives. You're telling me you'd take Carter, Gionta or Barch over Jagr?

Actually I'd consider Carter. So it'd be Jagr/Carter.

Considering Jagr is about 75 yes i keep all over him. Jagr will play around 40 games this year and of course 0 in playoffs but thats not his fault LOL

He scored 16 goals last year. More than any Devil and 5 more than Barch, Gionta, Josefson and Carter combined

Glad you're not my team GM then Marc as you are talking a load of bs.... Jagr has played 118 of a possible 130 games since returning to the NHL.... He is immeasurable better than the other players mentioned even at this stage of his carer.... doubly so when you think the Devils have lost Kovalchuk and Parise in the past two seasons.... I'm with MockingJay, I would keep him

I didnt actually see that this was if it happened now at this moment in time but to be honest to think Jagr is as good as he was even 5/6 years ago is ridiculous. He cant skate anymore , yeah he is one of the best snipers ever and can do a job on the PP but if he is going to be Kansas's best player next year then it really does highlight how awful they are
