First Shanaban of the season?
Hossa out after a shot to the head (stop me if you have heard this before). Think we will be hearing from the Sheriff before long.
Re: First Shanaban of the season?
You are a bit late if you think this is the first one.
We have had a Shanaban, as have the Caps for killing choc. orange.

That's very unfortunate for Hossa. I think any slightly heavy punishment handed out would be very unfair. Hossa skates into Hansen who just stands his ground. Maybe a small to medium sized fine would be the top for that for me.
Re: First Shanaban of the season?
They were more slap on the wrists than proper Shanabans Jonzee so they don't count
And I disagree, if they really want to limit shots to the head they can't just hand out a fine as that will do bugger all to stop it.

Re: First Shanaban of the season?
But this wasn't a regular intentional shot to the head. It was just a coming together where I feel Hossa is more at fault for hitting Hansen's arm with his head. Maybe Hossa is still tender from the Torres hit or is playing up to any head shots because the refs might feel sympathy towards him.
Re: First Shanaban of the season?
Not regular in that it wasn't a check no but who the hell catches with their arm out like that? If he was trying to catch the puck his hand would have been leading not his entire forearm.
Re: First Shanaban of the season?
I watched this with the sound off so that I could judge with my eyes only, and I have come to conclusion that I don't know.
Yeah maybe he was trying to grab the puck out the air, yeah maybe it was unintentional, yeah maybe Hossa is ginger but what do the rules say about any of these three issues. Nothing.

This is the thing its a grey area but I would say the headshot rule can be used here. Will be interesting to see what they come up with
Re: First Shanaban of the season?
It was clumsy at best, 1 game seems fair.
I do feel a little torn about Hanesn though, on one had hes a Nuck and i hate him, but then hes also a Colombia Steve and i love him

Kerry Fraser's (former NHL ref) take on this:http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/kerry_fraser/?id=416432
Also this sort of incident happens all the time in the AFL with no helmets!!!
As for the suspension....... I dunno. Seemed to me that both players where going for an airborne puck and hossa got some contact in the head, less than a stick length away from the Torres incident. Which should not (but probably did) set alarm bells ringing.

Re: First Shanaban of the season?
Shanaban is nothing more than a clueless chucking funt!!!!
During the Blues game against the Av's the other evening, Olver dished out a horrendous head shot on Vladimir Tarasenko. It is believed that Tarasenko was out cold before he even hit the ice!!.
Not only did Olver escape sanction on the night, but Shanaban and his goons claim that the hit was ok!!!
I'm wondering if it was revenge for the fact they had to recind David Backes ban as he didn't actually make contact with the other skater!!!

Re: First Shanaban of the season?
speaking of Shanaban himself, he has released a video detailing the 'evolution of a suspension':
http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=60&id=204867
But i sort of feel sorry for the man, no matter what he does the sentence is going to be too severe or lenient, has to try to make up for plays that officals missed. If a call is not made he is going to piss off the team and fan base which suffered the action also its a hell of a fast sport in which he is trying to read the minds of players........... and reading minds is pretty darn difficult
