Fan identity crisis
As a new-ish NHL fan the lockout rocked my feeling for the game. As September changed to October and the World Series came and went along with no hope of the NHL season starting any time soon my interest drifted and baseball took over as my 2nd to NFL favourite US sport. I don't feel connected to the Habs anymore. I've been a "fan" for 2 years now and never really felt excited when they've won games.
Re: Fan identity crisis
I don't blame you. The Habs suck
*Yes I know my team does as well but I love them Don't ask why.

You might change your mind once you've watched a couple of games. I always wonder as the baseball season is winding down and the NFL is starting, if I'll love hockey just as much as I did when I first got into it. But all it takes is for Jack Edwards to say "welcome to New England hockey night", a Rene Rancourt fist-pump, and a few camera shots from outside the Garden, and I'm hooked again before the puck has even dropped.
Or you could just switch allegiance, and support the Bruins instead.

Surely that's enough to turn the TV off?

Hell no! That one's a shoo-in on my Jack Edwards Bingo card.

Don't let the greedy North Americans ruin your appetite for the game. The NHL is just one league. Hockey's played in loads of other countries! But I know where you're coming from - it's been so long now since I watched the Ducks I had to look up their roster on wikipedia the other day to remind me who they'll be icing on their (woefully lightweight) 3rd and 4th lines. Ah, Andrew Cogliano...I remember you. And as I resigned myself to no hockey this season I stopped following what was going on a quite a while now. But when the games start I'll be hooked again in no time - and I don't even expect the Ducks to do much at all; but at least mediocrity is entertaining in hockey.

Right now if I were to "jump ship" I'd probably choose a New York team or go completely different and head out west.
Re: Fan identity crisis
Pick a team that's more likely to get relocated, like Phoenix. That way you can support a new team every few years

I'm not somebody who chops and changes. I've been a Giants fan for 7 years and a Mets fan for 6. I'm still finding my way in hockey. I don't know anywhere near as much about brief NHL history as I do with the NFL.
I think you can forgive me for this feeling after just under one and a half seasons and then half a locked out season.
Re: Fan identity crisis
Yeah, if you have no connection to the area it's not always easy to connect with their sports team. You could always just follow as a hockey fan. I'm really looking forward to watching a lot of different teams in the east this year as none of the eastern teams are in competition with my Flanes.
Sometimes it's just fun to watch as a neutral Nd enjoy the game. If you see enough teams play, you'll end up finding a team who's style you enjoy watching.

No! Don't go west. It means if you want to watch a live game you have to stay up until stupid o'clock.
I am forever thankful that I got relocated to Boston. One of the other options was Buffalo. Just think, I could have been a Sabres fan. How depressing would that have been?
Heck, I'm even starting to cheer for the Pats. (I'll always be a Packers fan first though).

Before I knew any better, I liked SJ, Van, NYR, Ott, Phx, as well as Philly.
Then the rest fell away, and it's been Philly for 13 years.
Nowt wrong with what Jiggy said and joptering about until you find a team that sticks.

The team I hate the 3rd most, after Dal and NYG.

Re: Fan identity crisis
I didn't start watching the NHL until mid March 2011 when I first got ESPNA so I guess around the time teams were locking up playoff spots I wanted to watch and root for an Eastern team so chose the Habs as they were 6th seed I think and seemed middle of the road and not glory hunting. I have to admit I barely watched there games last season. I mainly focused on the Atlantic and Central divisions because they had the closest standings and reasonable times to stay awake.
Jonzee, if you hate NYG maybe I should try and see how I like NYR. Already follow two teams that make me hate Philly. Why not make it three?

Re: Fan identity crisis
Right now I'm thinking Rangers or Sabres. Just to stay in state and perhaps not seem a bandwagoner if I do ditch the Habs.
Re: Fan identity crisis
Sabres if you don't want to be a bandwagoner Rangers are one of the favourites for this year sadly.
