Twitter is a heck of a lot of fun at the moment. I think the truculent one is actually trending.

(And I was only about two minutes in front of Homer with the news).

Sounds good to me!

Don't understand the timing of this at all. If it had happened after last season yes, part way through this season if Leafs are tanking? sure. After lockout before CBA even finalised? Just weird.

Apparently it's because he wouldn't pull the trigger on a Luongo trade. Although I think not trading for Lou was one of his better decisions.

That was my thinking.... my theory was that the "Luongo rule" was basically Burkes baby as he was pushing hard for that and it would have been rather hypocritical for him to then trade for the very player that rule has become named after! So they dump him and promote the guy who has already traded for Luongo before.

Expect a Luongo trade sometime in the near future.

Just watched some of the comments about Burkes leaving and doesn't this sound a little contradictory?

They said the main reason for firing Burke was they wanted a new voice to take the team in a new direction...... then Nonis comes out and says he intends to take the team in the same direction with the same men behind the bench.

Yeah, I laughed at that - We need a new style of play, then employ the one guy who will keep with the Burkie Styleee. Oh well, another eight years of dismal failure on it's way.

On a side note, on Twitter it was interesting to see that nearly any Leaf fan was glad about the news, and fans of other teams thought this meant we were in a state of disarray and it was a bad move. Really? Could it get worse? What's that? Nonis? oh.....

lol! yep pretty much. I don't see it as a bad move, more an obvious one with weird timing.

Puck Daddy podcast made a good point I had considered myself. That he was fired now because they knew he didn't fit what the new owners wanted. Whether Nonis does is another thing but he is easier to get rid of if the team succeeds. The controversy around Burke is something that some owners just wont like.

Also they are keeping the staff now because of the madness that will preceed the CBA. Getting new guys in would put them behind in all of that. They may change everything next season or if Nonis does well give him a chance but either way Burke was too big for their liking sort of thing.

Yeah I saw that too and it is probably right. They reckoned on TSN that the new owners probably wanted him gone right away but as they didn't take over until a couple of weeks before the lockout started they most likely wanted to wait until the CBA stuff was done first.

HOLY MACKINAW!! This must be a huge loss for the bruins franchise...

But seriously I am not surprised he went, the feeling in leafsnation was that he had been given time, some contentious trade moves but ultimately it did not work out.

But you see what happened in Florida under Dale Tallon, took him a year to re-build a struggling franchise and they make the play-offs........ granted he took advantage of the situation he sort of made in chicago!!!
