Rypien found dead.

The off season has claimed another NHL player, Rick Rypien was found dead at his home.

Strange how 2 fighters have died in such a short space of time. It makes me think of an article I saw about fighting in the NHL and what the more well known fighters actually go through. If I can find it I will post it as it was an interesting read. Not saying that is a reason for Rypien's passing but it seemed relevant after reading it.

Indeed, I recall reading an article from Mike Ulmer (Maple Leafs blogger) about the lives that enforcers lead and the pressures they were under compared to the 'skilled' players. It was a very interesting yet somewhat controversial read, claiming that the enforcer type player was much more likely to turn to drink/drugs and obviously the potential damage from fighting/hard checking. I'm not saying that Rypien, Boogie or any other tough guy is guaranteed to go down this road, but the chances of them doing so were much higher. I'll try and find the article, but in the meantime, my thoughts with Rypiens family.

As the current 606 employer of Rick, the Victory franchise wish to honor him by raising a banner to the echelons of the Pirates Arena at this evenings game. He will also be graced with the honorary captaincy for the night.

All our thoughts are with Rick's family and friends at this tragic time.

I'm gutted. Rick Rypien was one of my favourite Canucks, ever since he came into the league. Such a sad end to his life - more will come out over the next few weeks and months, but it appears that he had been suffering from some mental health issues for a considerable period of time, and he finally succumbed to his demons. Such a shame, as he was a terrier on the ice, a great teammate, and a fantastic role model. RIP Rick.
