Trade deadline madness
Last nights trade deadline promised to be an entertaining affair and it did not disappoint.
Following the departure of Brad Richards, GM Homer was offered Marc Savard from the New York City Crunch. Homer was immediately interested as Savard would provide a more than suitable replacement for the reparted Richards and further strengthen the Beefs for their push for a playoff spot.
The process was not smooth however and multiple offers were throw back and forth until a deal was finalised and agreed upon right at the stroke of the deadline at 11pm UK time.
'We knew we wanted Savard' said Homer, 'the question was the price, we didn't want to completely mortgage our future after our efforts to get younger.'
The price was always going to involve Tom Gilbert who was one of the Beefs top puck moving defenders. His ability with the puck and without it is top notch and the Beefs would not make a move without a suitable replacement. 'We didn't want to rush our prospects through from the farm so felt we needed something in return and Mara gives us that replacement.'
The Beefs had to include their first round pick next season as well but Homer isn't too concerned with that. 'We have our first round selection in this years draft and fully intend to use it. We have some great young prospects and our team looks set for a good time yet.'
The Beefs jump straight back into action tonight with a completely new look. Heatley will be back from his suspension and with Savard the Beefs hope they can hit off with some good chemistry. Coach Quenneville is going to try and get them working together so that he can reunite Stastny and Iginla on the 2nd line where they had been so dominant in the past. 'Paul and Iggy have a great partnership and with Michalek swapping wings we feel we have the makings of a very effective line.'
Come down to the Steakhouse tonight and everyone wearing a Beefs jersey gets a free glass of milk and a coupon to buy one get one free at the local outback.
